Congressmen thank Prince and Blackwater

It was an unusual congressional hearing where the majority party had hoped to score a home run and mop the floor with the owner of the nation's most prolific provider of diplomatic security services.

Instead, after nearly four hours of talking and questioning at the October 2 event, even the critics appeared to grovel at the feet of the former Navy SEAL who is credited with saving the lives of all American diplomats in Iraq.

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) acknowledged to Prince amid his criticism, "I’ve heard a lot of complimentary things about what you all do. And I’m sure you do a great job." He added, "You're a very impressive witness."

Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) told Prince, "the American people are indebted to you."

Rep. Diane Watson (D-CA) said, "I want to commend Mr Prince for his duties, for his skill, and for his heading up Blackwater." She told Prince, "You are providing a service. And I commend you." Rep. Watson even suggested that Blackwater train the US military to perform security functions.

Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT), who has been to Iraq more than 18 times and knows Blackwater's professionalism well, commented to Prince, "Every year you have had men who have risked their lives and been killed fulfilling their mission." Shays added company has fulfilled its mission "100 percent." "That's a perfect record," Shays added. "And you don't get any credit for it for some reason."

Even the committee chairman, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), melted before Prince: "We appreciate what you've done."

Let's see, you started this blog in September of 2007. Did something major happen last month that might make producing positive publicity necessary for your company, er, Blackwater? Just wondering.

Let's get some comments on this board!

What hearings were you watching? That's some serious cherrypicking ya got going on here.

As for Prince's ties to the Republican party it's no wonder Blackwater has been able to leapfrog a number of much older and well-established US firms in Iraq.

From TPM:
"Prince founded Blackwater in 1997 with money he inherited from his father, Edgar Prince, the head of Prince Automative. The elder Prince and his wife were major Republican and conservative activists and funders. And Prince himself co-founded The Family Research Council with Gary Bauer and apparently provided the key early funding for the group.

According to Bauer, "I can say without hesitation that, without Ed and Elsa and their wonderful children, there simply would not be a Family Research Council."

Prince's sister, Betsy DeVos, is married is the former Chair of the Michigan Republican Party and her husband is Dick DeVos, failed candidate for governor of Michigan and scion of the DeVos family, founders of Amway and major funders of Republican and conservative causes.

Amway is privately owned by the DeVos and van Andel families. And to give some sense of the scale of their political giving, according to a 2005 Center for Public Integrity study, Dick & Betsy DeVos were the fifth largest political givers in the country during the 2004 election cycle. Richard DeVos Sr. & his wife were ranked third. And Jay Van Andel was ranked second.

Let's just say they give some real money to the Republican party and its candidates. And of course there are the DeVos Family Foundations which give money to conservative causes.

Back in 1990 Erik Prince interned for Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA). Blackwater's lobbyist in DC is Paul Behrends, a former Rohrabacher aide who he met when the two worked for the congressman. Later he interned in the first Bush White House. But after doing so, he and his father broke with President Bush and supported the insurgent candidacy of Patrick J. Buchanan.

The then-22 year old Prince told the Grand Rapids Press, "I interned with the Bush administration for six months. I saw a lot of things I didn't agree with -- homosexual groups being invited in, the budget agreement, the Clean Air Act, those kind of bills. I think the administration has been indifferent to a lot of conservative concerns."

In addition to running Blackwater Prince also serves on the board of Christian Freedom International."

I hope Erik Prince has saved his money. He and his band of mercenaries are going to need it.

There should be an immediate investigation by a joint law enforcement unit made up of Iraqis and Americans formed.

This unit should give Republican war-profiteers like this fuck Prince a little Iraqi-style justice. I would suggest a noose. Nooses? What's the plural?

John Mica, R FL 7, moved to adjourn at the end of his introductory remarks. He never ceases to amaze me with his petty partisan behavior in trying to divert attention away from potential embarrassment to the administration, in this case trying to postpone the hearing.

I was also intrigued during the 2nd panel hearing at the official who was refusing to answer a simple yes or no question in the public forum.

Thankfully, Prince not only donates heavily to the GOP, but also gives cash to fake Green candidates.

And while I'm here, I'd like to give a shout out to Mitt Romney's main man at Blackwater, Cofer Black!

Don't you guys ever feel shame that you're stealing my money to indiscriminately shoot Iraqi civilians?

Wait. What am I saying? It's your business model! And Congressman Issa said, in your defense, that you'd frag Congressman Waxman -- after all the nice things he said about you (or at least the thing you've quoted him saying on your blog.).

Norton says I am indebted.

Indebted? Hardly! We pay Blackwater six times per person what it would cost to have a US serviceperson do the same job. My grandkids will be paying for the profits Blackwater is raking in now. That is, if there is any America left by then when China gets tired of lending us money.

Maybe she meant "the American people are indentured servants to you and your profits."

It's apparent the owner of this blog finally understands what's going on and has probably been to Iraq.

The Democrats destroyed national security agencies such as the Department of Defense and this is what we get. The private sector is taking up the slack for an inept government. You can rejoice at Blackwater’s loss of 30 guys in Iraq, all of which are former special operations forces who are returning to harm's way to complete a very specialized mission, but that’s pretty sick. We need them to protect our diplomats from the horrible abuses that happen to people in Iraq by murderous musfidoon; as is evidenced by what happened to those four heroes who were mutilated in 2004 in al Anbar.

Raleigh, NC -- The families of four American security contractors who were burned, beaten, dragged through the streets of Fallujah and their decapitated bodies hung from a bridge over the Euphrates River on March 31, 2004, are reaching out to the American public to help protect themselves against the very company their loved ones were serving when killed, Blackwater Security Consulting. After Blackwater lost a series of appeals all the away to the U.S. Supreme Court, Blackwater has now changed its tactics and is suing the dead men's estates for $10 million to silence the families and keep them out of court.

Sounds like most of you do not know what a mercenary is or actually does. It also sound just like all the squawking I heard from the left during Time and Murtha’s comment s on the Haiditha Marines. I’m sure that all the slain Iraqi’s were minding their own business. The FBI is sending in a team today to assist with an investigation so we will see. I will not try and change anyone’s mind because in most cases they already have it made up. Most of you have no idea how the ROE works and how this has resulted in needless U.S. and British casualties. Blackwater provides a valuable service in protecting high-level diplomats who includes all the tools in Congress from the left and right who pay visits. The majority of their operatives at this level are former Special Forces and SEAL SNCO’s, many of which are recently retired. The use of outfits like Blackwater, and Dyncorp keep Central Command from having to use active duty Special Operations troops as bodyguards so they can be used doing what they do best, eliminating bad guys. Reading the comments it is readily apparent that the majority of the commenter’s have never served a day in uniform. If you had you might be a little bit better informed on what these private contractors actual do in support of the military overall mission responsibilities in the AOR, not just in Iraq but around the world. I will close by giving you the no kidding definition of a mercenary from the Geneva Convention.

Backwater’s protection services do not fit the definition of "mercenary" under international law. The Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, relating the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts gives six characteristics that define "mercenary," as Protocol I, Article 47.2 shows:
A mercenary is any person who:
(a) Is specially recruited locally or abroad in order to fight in an armed conflict;
(b) Does, in fact, take a direct part in the hostilities;
(c) Is motivated to take part in the hostilities essentially by the desire for private gain and, in fact, is promised, by or on behalf of a Party to the conflict, material compensation substantially in excess of that promised or paid to combatants of similar ranks and functions in the armed forces of that Party;
(d) Is neither a national of a Party to the conflict nor a resident of territory controlled by a Party to the conflict;
(e) Is not a member of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict; and
(f) Has not been sent by a State, which is not a Party to the conflict on official duty as a member of its armed forces.
Blackwater security guards are not "specially recruited" to "fight in an armed conflict;" they do not take direct part in hostilities as their role is as guards, not soldiers; their motivation is not "essentially the desire for private gain," as despite the high pay with no benefits, the main motivation for most guards is to help the United States; and all Blackwater personnel guarding the State Department are nationals and residents of the US, a party to the conflict (support staff are multinational). So they do not meet the Geneva Conventions' six standards to be considered mercenary.
in case anyone cares I’m a retired SNCO with close ties to units and individuals who are currently deployed in Southwest Asia.
